2013 Zero Waste Festival Results

An estimated 1,000 people enjoyed spending a beautiful summer evening at the 18th annual Lynnhurst Summer Festival August 1, while creating just a very small amount of trash. Thank you to the organizing team from the Lynnhurst Neighborhood Association, Neighborhood Coordinator Ruth Olson, the Lynnhurst Environmental Committee, MPRB staff, many festival volunteers and a dedicated group of “waste station monitors”, for making possible another very low waste event. It takes a bit of effort to work with vendors, volunteers and those attending the festival—but, as you can see below; the results have been quite good towards our goal of becoming a zero-waste festival. This year, due to various factors including the type of food sold, beverage containers, and a few more dirty diapers—the amount of organics was down, the recycling was up, and the trash percentage was not as low as in prior years. At future festivals, with everyone’s help, we’ll continue to strive towards our goal of zero-waste.
